From Losing Everything To Building A $10 Million Company (Robin Powered)
How do you scale a company whose business model disappears overnight?
Yeah, you read that correctly! Boston-based office management tool Robin Powered had the rug pulled from under its feet at the beginning of 2020. after the world went into lockdown. As most of us rushed to set up a work-from-home solution, Robin’s management had to think fast and act even faster.
What came out of this disaster is probably the fastest-growing period for the company.
During our recent visit to Boston, we had the pleasure of talking to Robin’s co-founder, Brian Muse, and its current CEO, Micah Remley. They gave us insight into the company’s changes over the last several years, the future of their product, and the future of hybrid work – why it’s not going away that easily and why some companies are trying to push for a partial return to the office.
Our hosts IBB and Mia Biberovic talked with Brian about the early days of Robin. Before the company and the product, there was an agency (there always is, right?), as Brian and other co-founders experimented with different in-house startups. The one that stuck was an office management tool, which later became Robin Powered. This tool helps companies manage their workspaces, and employees book their desks and conference rooms.
Brian talked about finding the product market fit, raising capital when money wasn’t an issue (pre-2022), scaling and pivoting during the hardest of times, hiring a new CEO, and why not all managers are a perfect fit for different stages of company growth.
His colleague, Micah, now serves as Robin’s CEO. A seasoned professional with over 20 years of management experience in technology companies, Micah talked about the challenges of running a company that is experiencing changes, as well as how the market has shifted – why companies have to think about their revenue nowadays and why the era of raising absurd amounts of capital based on growth is behind us.
