What is text-to-speech?
Text-to-Speech is Infobip’s automated service that converts written text into an audio file. It’s being used as a feature of the Voice messages service.
This tool makes written content across platforms easily accessible to people with visual impairments, low literacy, cognitive disabilities, or other barriers. Other key advantages of text-to-speech include enhanced learning, mobility, freedom, cost-effectiveness, and more.
How does text-to-speech work?
Text-to-speech takes words on a computer or other digital device using neural networks and machine learning technologies to create synthesized speech outputs from the text.
The voice you hear when activating the text-to-speech service is computer-generated. The reading pace can be sped up or slowed down, and some text-to-speech tools highlight words as they are read aloud.
What are the types of text-to-speech tools?
Types of text-to-speech include:
- Built-in text-to-speech – this type is already built-in within your device, for example, in your computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.
- Web-based tools – some websites offer this tool on their website
- Text-to-speech apps – specialized apps that can be downloaded on smartphones, tablets, and computers or added to web browsers
- Text-to-speech software programs – many literacy software programs for desktop and laptop computers have these programs
